Reflections on December’s Carbon Literacy Workshop

Every time we run a Carbon Literacy workshop, something amazing happens. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean monumental or earth shattering, but it does mean special, memorable, significant.

Delegates can be moved, for example when they learn about climate change’s impact on vulnerable people, or wowed when they find out about the sponge cities of China or by some of the statistics we discuss, such as the link between increased A & E emissions and every 1 degree increase in temperature. Most importantly, and the thing that we love the most, is when delegates start to become excited about what they can do. Whether that’s to implement a low carbon business travel policy, actively seek to only hire and work with associates whose values align with a low carbon ethos, or simply use their phones less, it’s the emergence of the quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) determined ‘I’m going to do whatever I can’ attitude that motives and inspires us here at Traineasy the most.

There is always a moment during every Carbon Literacy workshop that we realise the tide is turning, the movement is swelling and there are more people than ever using their power, however great or small that might be, to reduce the emissions of their workplace, of the workplaces associated with their organisation’s value chain, and of their homes. We are only with delegates for four hours, and we’re all online so only meet each other virtually, but what an interesting and varied four hours they always are! And it seems as if delegates agree – the feedback we receive is so encouraging, and it helps us stay focused on continual improvement, keeping the content around which our workshops are structured up-to-date, as well as refining it as we deliver more workshops with every month that goes by.

So, what’s next for Traineasy’s Green Skills division? More Carbon Literacy workshops? Definitely! More in the way of follow-on learning? Yes, we think this is a good idea too and one of our attendees this month suggested we set up a free online community for delegates to chat, share ideas, encourage and support each other. This is underway as is our longer-term strategy to partner with complimentary businesses to strengthen our mutual ability to support customer organisations in achieving their sustainability goals. Roll on 2025, we can’t wait to see what it brings!
