Carbon Literacy is a fundamental Green Skill. It means being aware of the impact of everyday activities on the climate, and knowing what steps can be taken to reduce the emissions of your workplace and home. Here at Traineasy, we deliver two types of Carbon Literacy course, one aimed at businesses, another developed for Civil Service (council or central government) employees. Participants who complete the training, can be certified as Carbon Literate by the accrediting body, the Carbon Literacy project.
The CLP is an organisation working to create a low carbon culture by aiming to make Carbon Literacy training accessible to everyone. As the accreditation body, The CLP does not deliver training directly, but rather training is outsourced to experienced Carbon Literacy trainers or training organisations, such as Traineasy. Originating in Manchester, Carbon Literacy has expanded nationwide, and is now being delivered internationally.
Becoming Carbon Literate could be the most important thing you’ll ever do. In order to achieve your Carbon Literacy certificate, you do have to put in some effort. Only individuals who have shown engagement, enthusiasm and have contributed to the workshop activities and discussions can become certified.
Before the workshop, each delegate must:
After the workshop each delegate must:
Workshops usually starts at 10:00 with a welcome and introductions, and finish at 15:00. They are organised into three sections during which delegates discuss a variety of questions posed by the trainer. The workshop usually includes 1 x 30-minute break and 1 x 45-minute break. If all delegates are from the same organisation, the timings of the workshop may be adjusted by agreement.
It is possible for organisations to become accredited CLOs. There are several levels from Bronze to Platinum and the benefits, other than the obvious reduction in emissions, include happier stakeholders leading to improvements in customer and staff recruitment and retention.

Certificates awarded to individuals carry unique codes and will not expire, but it is likely that the core elements of the content will evolve over time, and standards and expectations will rise. When subsequent “upgraded” versions of the certificate become available, individuals may choose to refresh their skills to ensure they retain the latest version. This is particularly likely to be the case if these certificates are used to support the Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) status of an organisation.
